ABOUT

Learn to Skate (L2S, formerly called Reckless Rollers) is our introduction to skating for roller derby. L2S is a progressive five-week skating clinic aimed at getting beginner skaters ready for entry-level roller derby with a top-ranked WFTDA league.

Experienced BAD skaters will teach you the basics of flat track roller derby. We’ll break down essential skills, such as proper derby stance, stopping techniques, fluid movement on the track, laterals, jumping and weaving. 

After camp ends, BAD will hold a “Join BAD Day,” which is included in your camp journey, giving you the opportunity to show us what you’ve learned and continue on your route to join our league. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

L2S is open to adults interested in learning how to play flat track roller derby under the WFTDA ruleset. Before you begin camp, you must be able to:

• balance/roll on skates with no outside assistance

• stay active for up to two hours at a time

• exert yourself physically and mentally throughout the session

Attendance at every session is not required but highly encouraged, as each class builds upon the previous one. We are limiting the camp to 50 skaters in order to provide each participant quality instruction and individual feedback.

PRICING

Payment is a sliding scale of $50-300. We suggest a payment of $100 for the 10 sessions, but please pay whatever is reasonable for you and your financial situation. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. 

REQUIRED GEAR

For each session, quad skates, a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouthguard. We can provide some equipment, although we can’t guarantee the quality of the items or that specific sizes will be available. 

However, you will need to provide your own mouthguard.

COVID Safety

All participants and trainers are vaccinated, as per WFTDA and BAD policy. Masking is optional with testing highly encouraged prior to each session. Masking may become mandatory at any time during camp sessions, in response to significant increases in Alameda County’s reported COVID-19 cases. 

Please note that roller derby is a full contact sport and you will often be in close proximity to other vaxxed skaters.
