Game Recap: San Francisco ShEvil Dead vs. Berkeley Resistance – July 13th, 2019

The Palace of Fine Arts was filled with roller derby fans again on the night of July 13th, with everyone eager to see the Berkeley Resistance take on the San Francisco ShEvil Dead in the third game of the season. After a neck-and-neck battle with the Oakland Outlaws in June, the Berkeley Resistance had proven themselves a fierce contender for the newly-formed ShEvil Dead.

The night was filled with hard-hitting action from the first whistle, as Berkeley’s newly-transferred jammer Beaver Mansbridge kicked it off with a 7-0 jam. Berkeley continued to rack up points during the first half with Slam Chowder, Hell or High, and Harmageddon on the jam line, and tight defensive play keeping ShEvil at bay. Formidable blockers Kate Silver, Red Card, Knockout, Psi, HOS, and Missy Misdemeanor created airtight walls to capture opposing jammers and hold them in place. When jammers started to break free from the pack, Berkeley strategically sent Big Perm to the front to catch them long enough for the rest of the Berkeley blockers to reform around them as a united, powerful wall.

ShEvil jammers Disco Brawl, Kitty Killa, and Stomping Hound all managed to pick up some points for their team during the first half, but the second half saw a quadrupling of their points as the zombies found more opportunities for strategic and offensive play. Powerhouse pivots Neuralize HER and Risky Ginger received star passes all night, taking the helmet cover to assume the jammer role and become eligible to score points. This strategy, along with offensive moves to break up Berkeley blocker formations and a tightening of defense by blockers Wicked Bruisah, Sparkle Motion, Dizaztronaut, Tequila Schatz, Lethal Lipstick and Slugga Mugga, gave ShEvil the edge to start catching up with the lead that their competitor had forged before halftime.

After an impressive fight from both sides, it was Berkeley who came away with a sweeping victory with a final score of 238 – 41. The Berkeley Resistance and Oakland Outlaws have taken home one win each so far this season, and the final showdown between these fearsome teams is on August 24. ShEvil will face off against Peninsula Roller Derby in the first game, and you’ll want to be there to see who takes home the title of 2019 League Champions at the end of the night!

2019 GAME 2 Recap: Oakland Outlaws vs. Berkeley Resistance

The second bout of Bay Area Derby’s 2019 season saw the Berkeley Resistance, armed with a fresh roster of new faces amongst longtime teammates, take on the Oakland Outlaws, the 2018 Champs and season opener winners. With teams this evenly matched, it was anyone’s game. The buzzing energy of the crowd gave way to rousing cheers that rang through the Palace of Fine Arts as the skaters took to the track, with everyone excited to see how these teams would compete and who would take home the win.

The first jam pitted Oakland’s Legs//Cité against Berkeley’s newly-transferred Kate Silver, who made her new teammates proud with a two-pronged attack of hard hitting and strategic footwork to push her way to lead jammer status. Slam Chowder was up next and gained lead for her team again with some well-placed hits to clear her path through the pack. The next lineup of blockers, each determined not to give up any points, pushed both jammers backwards once the whistle blew. Berkeley’s Big Perm broke away to land several quick, hard hits on the opposing blockers, and created just enough space for the lightning-quick jammer Hell or High to dart through and take the lead. Berkeley jammer Harmageddon continued Berkeley’s streak with a soaring apex jump, but received a penalty when her skate grazed the inside of the track upon landing. This gave Oakland jammer Blood, Sweat, and Ears the opportunity to score the first points of the game for their team.

Oakland continued to catch up with Berkeley during the remainder of the first half, switching to more deliberate offense once an opposing jammer had been caught by a wall of Oakland blockers – among them the impenetrable Hieronymus Bash, Ripley Effect, and Lethally Blonde. Veteran skaters Grim Reeba, Esteemed Bun Bun and Eris Jordan, along with brand-new Outlaw Maya, all found opportunities to break up even the most powerful Berkeley formations. The first strategic star passes of the game came from Berkeley to pivots Red Card and The Boonvillain, who each took their jammer’s helmet cover and raced off to start scoring points. By the end of the first half, Oakland led 71-45.

The second half saw a breakout-success power jam for first-time Oakland jammer Peter Panic, who drew roars from the crowd as they racked up points for their team. Berkeley responded by upping offensive moves from Dixie Did It, Red Card and Knockout, while tightening up their defensive play with HOS, Missy Misdemeanor, Psi, and Attila the Hut locking together to create obstacles that even the strongest Oakland jammers had trouble breaking through – although sneaky ones like Snatch managed to dash around on the outside line. Both teams continued to fight head to head with Oakland eventually pulling away and ending with a well-deserved win, 178 – 118.

Bay Area teams return to the Palace of Fine Arts on July 13th, with the Resistance taking on the San Francisco ShEvil Dead. It’s not too soon to grab your tickets and see who will emerge victorious!

4/20/2019 San Francisco ShEvil Dead v. Oakland Outlaw Game Recap

While winds raged outside the Palace of Fine Arts, crowds gathered inside to witness the opening bout of Bay Area Derby’s 2019 season. It was the newly-zested zombies of San Francisco ShEvil Dead playing against the outstanding Oakland Outlaws (champs of the #20SkateTeen season). Fans feasted on hotdogs and nachos to sustain their raucous yells as music from the Silk Road Truckers raised heart rates and anticipation — which team would come out on top?

Legs//Cité of Oakland took the line against Neuralize HER of the ShEvil Dead. A piercing whistle marked the start of the game, and the jammers were off! Legs//Cité pushed through the pack as lead jammer, scoring the first two points of the game. Next on the line was Snatch of the Oakland Outlaws, who pirouetted her away down the outside line and away from the pack. ShEvil’s jammer, Disco Brawl, kept pace with a brilliant star pass to the ShEvil pivot, Snakes Anna Plane, a pattern that would continue throughout the game. The first point for the zombies came when Red Hot Chilli Wrecker of ShEvil was able to get lead jammer status against Blood, Sweat, & Ears of the Outlaws and quickly call off the jam.

Throughout the first half of the game both teams struggled to skate on the slippery track. Oakland demonstrated solid footwork on the line and smart gameplay by scoring several points, then calling off the jam to prevent ShEvil jammers from scoring. Meanwhile, ShEvil experienced success in the last fifteen minutes of the first half, driving hard through the center of the pack and avoiding being hit out of bounds. Nonetheless, at halftime, Oakland led against the ShEvil Dead with a score of 106 – 42.

The Outlaws sustained their winning momentum in the second half, and were able to lock down their defense as skaters adjusted to the slick track. In the first few jams of the second half, blockers Lethally Blonde, Grim Reeba, Eris Jordan, and pivot Esteemed Bun Bun each played effective offense against ShEvil, creating opportunities for their jammer to pass by on the line and earn points. ShEvil Dead blockers Danger Dre and Brick Houser provided notable defense against Oakland, especially as they dealt with a power jam for the Outlaws in the first five minutes of play, and Stomping Hound scored ShEvil’s first points of the second half shortly thereafter. ShEvil jammer Neuralize HER came out hot after a team time out ten minutes into the second half, and scored seven much needed points for the zombies.

Throughout the second half fans saw more official and team timeouts and exciting power jams for each team. The last six minutes of play exemplified the game, with powerful play on both sides, and high-scoring jams for Oakland. In the nineteenth jam, Legs//Cité ran on her toes along the inside line to make the initial pass through the pack, while Hieronymus Bash and Ripley Effect provided relentless offense for the Outlaws. Wicked Bruisah of ShEvil made a powerful hit on Legs//Cité, knocking her out of bounds, although she was quickly back on the track scoring points.

The Outlaws sustained a victory of 267 – 95, and will return to the Palace of Fine Arts to defend their title against the Berkeley Resistance on June 1st. The hardworking zombies aren’t returning to their graves just yet, and will have another chance to triumph against the Resistance on July 13th. You won’t want to miss the action!
