Sep 1: Tryouts 2012

The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls are a full contact, all female, flat-track roller derby league consisting of five teams: The San Francisco ShEvil Dead, The Oakland Outlaws, The Richmond Wrecking Belles, The Berkeley Resistance, and a traveling all-star team, the internationally-ranked All-Stars. The B.A.D. Girl’s mission is to skate competitively on a regional and international level within our sanctioning body, the WFTDA, as well as locally with other established teams and leagues. Driven by a passionate love for the sport and aided by a national sisterhood of like-minded and dedicated women, the B.A.D. Girls are a skater owned and operated 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with a commitment to helping other grassroots organizations in the Bay Area.

At tryouts, skaters compete for a chance to join our league by demonstrating their knowledge of derby, skating skills, strength and athleticism. New skaters do not need to be experts, but must show an aptitude and understanding of roller derby as well as show room for improvement and coachability.

BVOTM – Lucas

Congratulations to our B.A.D. Volunteer of the Month, Lucas!

Lucas signed up for our Reckless Rollers program after he moved here from Minnesota. Mindiannapolis 500 immediately coerced him (lovingly, I'm sure!) to be B.A.D.'s coaching manager, and since then has been coaching our Swim Pool (the group of skaters, both home-grown and transfers from other leagues, eligible to be drafted on to Bay Area home teams). Says one Pool member, “he is awesome – really wants to help us grow as skaters in the pool and make it on to a home team. [Lucas is] always willing to work one on one if we have specific points of our skating/game play that we want to improve upon, drills are always fun, and he is totally approachable. He makes us work hard, but keeps us smiling.”

He's also an accomplished photographer, and recently helped our merch and web/IT committees revamp our online store. “You all are going to freak out when you see the new store,” says Bella Bomber, Merch Committee head. “Lucas' pictures really make it awesome.”

Ladies and gentlemen, Lucas!

What’s your gubmint name (the one on your birth certificate)? Lucas John Saugen

Do you have a derby name? How’d you get it? I had long ago in a far away land. Now people just call me Lucas; sometimes Coach Lucas

What do you do when you’re not supporting the Bay Area Derby Girls? By day I’m a professional commercial advertising photographer. I’ve got a pretty damn cute 14-month-old son, Steig. He takes up a lot of my time.

How did you become involved with our league? How long have you been with us? I moved to the Bay Area about 3 years ago and transferred in from a different league. I’ve been active with the sport since 2004.

If you had one super power what would it be? Would you use it for good or evil? If I had a super power I’d want a pretty lame super power. I mean there’s a lot of pressure if you could actually go around saving people’s lives. I’d rather just talk to the sea creatures because low expectations. I’d go with Aqua Man’s power.

Who’s your derby crush? (Moxi Skates founder) Estro Jen. She can really shred.
