BAD Comets by Nix Starling

BAD wins first two games of 2023 season!

On March 18, the BAD warehouse hosted our season opener, a quadruple header that pitted eight local Bay Area teams against each other in four exciting games. These bouts kicked off the 2023 California Derby Galaxy (CDG) season.

CDG is a coalition of Bay Area derby leagues playing under the WFTDA ruleset, and includes Bay Area Derby, along with Carquinez Quad Squad, Monterey Bay Roller Derby, Peninsula Roller Derby, Santa Cruz Roller Derby, Sonoma County Roller Derby and Undead Roller Derby

This year, BAD is fielding two teams to compete in the Galaxy, a Comets team and a Quasars team. Our Comets team is composed of our up-and-coming and returning skaters, and our Quasars are our veterans and advanced skaters.

March 18 saw BAD Comets play Peninsula Comets, and BAD Quasars play Peninsula Quasars, with BAD winning both games! CQSU (a mix of Carquinez Quad Squad and Undead Roller Derby skaters) Comets also faced off against Santa Cruz Comets, and CQSU Quasars played Santa Cruz Quasars.

You can watch all four games here

BAD Comets beat Peninsula Comets 301-177, with high scoring passes from jammers Malice In Wonderland and Speed Reading, who both graduated from our Baddies program last year. Detroit Demon, a recent transfer to BAD, also made her mark as a jammer, breaking through walls to take BAD to victory. Congratulations to Hot Wheels and Spider on playing their first bout and smashing it!

BAD Quasars then took the track, beating Peninsula Quasars 185-149. Jamming for BAD, Grim Reeba put the first points on the scoreboard for BAD in a close game. But BAD blockers Kitty Killa, Big Perm, Eris Jordan and Spiller held together impenetrable walls, allowing rising star jammers Coffee Bean and Randy to rack up points.

Congratulations to everyone who played! And thank you to BAD legend Smother Mary for bench-coaching us to victory.

Check out our Events page for more info on BAD’s upcoming games in the CDG season!

GAME 2 POSTPONED

After close consultation with our venue, Fort Mason, Bay Area Derby has decided to postpone Game 2 on Saturday, March 7, 2020 due to growing concerns about COVID-19.

Having spent a great deal of time and effort preparing for the game, we are incredibly disappointed to not be able to hold the event, and we know our fans are as well. However, ensuring the wellbeing of our community is our top priority, and we believe rescheduling the game is the best way to do that.

The new date for this game will be announced in the coming weeks. If you have already purchased tickets on Eventbrite for the 3/7 game, the cost of your ticket can be applied to a future game or refunded altogether. You’ll receive an email with details regarding refunds and transfers shortly.

BAD intends to hold games on May 9th and May 30th at Fort Mason, as planned.

We want to thank all our fans, volunteers and partners for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at the next game.

Season 2020 Game 1 recap

The 2020 Bay Area Derby season got off to a bang on February 16th, with an exciting bout overlooking the San Francisco waterfront in the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion. With the bleachers full of fans enjoying food trucks eats and a few cold brews, the San Francisco ShEvil Dead lined up against last year’s undefeated champions, the Oakland Outlaws.

The Outlaws sprinted to a lead in the first half, with veterans Esteemed Bun Bun, Grim Reeba and Spiller alternating jams with Luna Shovegood, along with two new draftees, Maeve of Mutilation and Rolling Thunder. The ShEvil squad countered with jams led by The Freak, Stomping Hound, and Demoraliza along with multiposition powerhouse Neuralize HER and a fresh face, new jammer Atomic Bombshell. The bout rolled into half time a close game, the Outlaws leading ShEvil 102 to 90.

By jam 19 in the second half, Oakland was still holding onto the lead, but they had two blockers in the penalty box at the end of jam. With only three Outlaws on the track, ShEvil put Neuralize HER in wearing the star. With Kitty Killa heading up a strong offense, Neuralize HER was able to take control and bring ShEvil into the lead with 172 points to Oakland’s 167.

With a minute left in the game, Spiller came in to jam for Oakland, facing off against Demoralizer on the ShEvil line, and fought back to tie the game at 176-176. With only one second left on the clock, the Outlaws called a timeout, squeezing in just one more two-minute jam that would decide the thrilling bout. Grim Reeba wore the star for Oakland, while Neuralize HER toed up for the SF squad. Neuralize HER broke out of the pack to take lead jammer, while Grim Reeba was forced to visit to the penalty box. Neuralize HER took full advantage of the power jam to push ShEvil into the lead with 180 points. With only fifty seconds left on the jam clock and in the entire game, Grim Reeba sprinted out of the box and lapped the field to put points on the board, while Neuralize HER fought her way to more earned passes in the final seconds. When the dust cleared, the San Francisco ShEvil Dead had 187 points against the Oakland Outlaws’ 184, toppling the 2019 Bay Area Derby home team champ.

Fresh off their victory, ShEvil will return to the arena on March 7, taking on the Berkeley Resistance.
